  • Summary: The four-track EP features songs from the band's "Strawberry Jam" studio sessions.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 12 out of 14
  2. Negative: 0 out of 14
  1. The four-track EP hints back at last year's Strawberry Jam, but the songs are more melodic and spacious--more patient in making way for whatever drifts in.
  2. Yet another must-have for Animal Collective fans.
  3. By submerging listeners gently, Water Curses never goes off the deep end.
  4. While aesthetically they are rather progressive (in indie rock or pop terms), conceptually and symbolically there is a lot lacking, and that this conflict drives a lot of what is interesting in their music.
  5. Ultimately, what we’re left with is an EP built around a great pop song, two good ones, and a throwaway.

Few bands can build more out of disparate parts than Animal Collective; they’re like The A-Team of music, fashioning something useful out of a pile of junk. Sometimes, however, they find too much pleasure in leaving the mess a slightly spruced-up mess and burying their tuneful sensibilities. [Summer 2008]

From the trancy dance song 'Water Curses' to the fluid, yet depressing 'Cobwebs' the album contains more than most full length albums do... at least as far as emotion and range comes. Expand

The first track alone is worth buying the album for. Obe of the best songs AC has ever written in my opinion.

The title track is probably their most driving, energetic song and it's absolutely fantastic. Street Flash starts out slow but builds into one of the rawest, yet beautiful moments I've ever heard in a song. Merriweather is a little too clean, Strawberry Jam is a little too dirty, this EP is the perfect balance. Expand

I think cokemachineglow and Dusted Magazine have the most accurate reviews of this EP (that I've seen).
