They manage to be thrilling and unsettling throughout. [Jan 2016, p.112]

We Are Nots may not be the last word in the phantom subgenre of weird punk, but if you want to know how to make your punk weird in the right way, you would be well advised to give Nots your attention.

The synthesizers, the gang vocals, their approach to choruses--it's all reasonably similar across these 27 minutes. Even Hoffmann’s vocal style, thrillingly furious in its from-the-gut delivery, doesn’t vary too much. But the structures, stories, and overall tones differ enough from song to song that this never feels like a monotone slog. They've created a surefooted, aesthetic defining opening statement.

We Are Nots is an impressive, if punishing, introduction. [Jan 2016, p.78]

As introductions go, We Are Nots is a sharp gut punch of a debut LP and certainly merits attention.

Although they sound the part, on the basis of this breakneck 27-minute debut, the actual songwriting seems too much like an afterthought. Only the Sonic Youth-indebted White Noise and the more considered closer Talk Show have the hooks to lodge more than fleetingly in the mind.

Any suggestion of sameness is speedily erased by Alexandra Eastburn's arsenal of skewed electronic embellishments and the breathless exuberance the group bring to the party. [Jan 2016, p.88]
