  • Summary: One of the rare country music stars who is both a critical and commercial success (and without crossing over into pop), Jackson returns with a follow-up to his huge 2002 hit 'Drive.'

Could be the best album he's ever made. [Dec 2004, p.146]
  2. What I Do feels like one of Jackson's most assured and best albums, proof positive that he's the best mainstream country singer of this decade.
  3. Reaffirms his position as one of the genre's most believable balladeers. [17 Sep 2004, p.78]
  4. Even when the emotions don't run especially deep, Jackson always sounds as though he means every word and gives those words his utmost respect. [5 Sep 2004]
  5. The enjoyable What I Do is similarly assured and clunker-free, but it also returns to the emotional compression that Drive often detoured.
  6. As a whole, the album stands as a benediction to an artist whose integrity and success has prevailed in the face of endless trends and fads that have swept away many lesser talents.
  7. A solid disc that lacks some of the emotional punch of 2002's Drive.

Not a bad song on this CD. Easily has 6-7 singles that could hit #1. The title song, already a huge hit, isn't even the best song on the Not a bad song on this CD. Easily has 6-7 singles that could hit #1. The title song, already a huge hit, isn't even the best song on the CD. "My Best Friend" and "Drugs or Jesus" showcase McGraws best vocals ever. And "Back When", though maybe difficult to get on the radio, is pure country and the best song about longing for past times that has come out in recent years. Expand

This is one of the best albums in the Alan Jackson series. I still can't get some of the song out of my head.
