Once again, this probably isn't an album that's going to bowl you over and set the world on fire; it's a grower. And it shows once again that Gomez know what they're going for and how to achieve it.

Whatever's on Your Mind is as scattershot as the band that made it.

A disappointing return from the former Mercury champions.

Their commercial star has long since waned, but there is enough here to suggest that Gomez's creative light still flickers on.

Nothing stands out too much, though, and that's a trait it shares with the rest of the band's ouvre. Nonetheless, this is another good effort from a great band who are coming close to veteran status.

Gomez finally makes peace with the fact that it's a pop band that loves to jam and a jam band that loves to write pop songs.

Specialists in Transatlantica hone their songcraft. [July 2011, p. 100]

The landscape has changed a lot since Gomez first broke down the door, announcing their arrival. This shouldn't take away from the fact that Whatever's On Your Mind is decent enough, as albums go, but you feel it's been preceded by too many slight returns to make new ground this time around.

The music in their latest release, Whatever's On Your Mind, stays on a pop path that's decorated with tinges of folk, blues, electronic, and whatever else they feel like throwing in.

Though they'd probably be better off rehashing Bring It On's supplicant roots-rock in the current climate, Whatever's on Your Mind begins with a fumbled acoustic strum, and after exactly three seconds of human touch, you get all the elbow grease, brow sweat, and rock'n'roll heart of a dubstep record Cut Gomez and they bleed Purell.

There's a difference between appealing to a broad audience and pandering to one, and that difference is having some sense of artistic soul. This has neither.

May not be their most ambitious album, but it's one of their finest. [July 2011, p. 113]

The five-strong troupe play fast and loose with the same elements that have served them so well across the last decade.

The title of Gomez's seventh studio album reflects the low-key, easy-flowing attitude these boyish Brits have maintained since winning the U.K.'s coveted Mercury Prize with their 1998 debut.

Whatever's On Your Mind fails to leave much of a lasting impression aside from the hooks and the impressive way the band can make a straightforward pop tune sonically adventurous.

Ignore the negative reviews. This is a fine album. Perhaps not the deepest or most high minded, but many critics don't have the proper appreciation for how difficult it is to make a catchy pop song that holds up over time. Fortunately for us, Gomez is very good at it. Full Review »
