    Yeezus sees Kanye West push himself like never before and he once again brings something new to the hip-hop party. The man is hard to like as a person but there is no doubt that he is an exceptional talent. He could have easily recycled what he's been doing for the last decade, released it and sold shedloads but instead he's launched a sonic attack on the music world. Yeezus doesn't seem to have anything new to say and outside of "New Slaves", West could be freestyling about anything and too often the material tries to shock but ends up just being plain distasteful.… Expand

This has been a characteristic if his from each classic but one predictable quality he has ironically is his unpredictability. His vulnerability to controversy is a large part of his reputation and art. This legend of ego, sex and extravagance reaches it's darkest peak. Yeezus seems like the best exploration of the splintered genius of the self proclaimed "best rapper alive". It takes shot at everything he could lay his eyes on both hating it but needing it. The maximalism of the coverart alone is high concept and self centered:they don't need to have a artsy attractive display to grip you,it being a kanye release is enough. The art is enough. Hypocrisy is made a privilege here and analyzed such as in the brilliant white capitalist take down,"new slaves " where discrimination is expressed through exclusion and stereotype ("don't touch nothing in the store" vs. "Come buy sum more")
    Provoking was definitely in mind in the conception of this album. The opener "on sight " assaults you with an abrasive instrumental that seems to sound like the creation of a weapon in some god of wars forge. Daft Punk acts as both hephaestus and Ares as they create and destroy, never recklessly though. He begins through announcing his impending success and power just before he brags about how many **** he gives(spoiler:none)
    Black Skinhead marches on fortified with industrial drum beats and aggressive breathless bars from Yeezy as a legendary Roman*(actually spartan but even that inaccuracy is necessary because how could he be wrong? It's just us hearing incorrectly XD)battle is placed alongside a greek tactic marvel . Metaphors and comparisons come out as quotes as he uses king kong to conceptualize the reception of interracial dating. After a song that dynamic the only thing that could follow it is perceived blasphemy as Ye takes his place in Olympus. Kanye's muse,Justin Vernon, makes his first of many appearances. His presence is as integral and constant as Ye Himself as he adds a sinister darkness and melancholy to either top off or accentuate whatever is spat out. The outro of pained erratic scream make being a God seem more of a burden than a privilege . Is this the price of being born hip hops innovator?     He attaches onto being black in a white capitalist society with the depth of Martin Luther king jr. As he acknowledges that racism has no tax bracket - that it only evolves. The visceral and soulful frank ocean outro just demonstrate his capabilities as a producer. The SOPHIE-esq transition a brilliant flourish that feels immediately essential. The dejected arca assisted "hold my liquor"&dancehall masterpiece "im in it" continue the streak he maintains throughout the 10tracks. "Blood on the leaves " enters softly with a pitched up Nina Simone sample and goes through two more changes at blink and you'll miss it pace as he name drops Jay-z infidelities,narrates a bitter divorce and bankruptcy. Rather than opt for commercial features he utilizes undergound Chi town drill rappers and up'n'comers. This further perpetuates his ego because he doesn't need help to sell record's . The closest to soulful West is in the martial thesis:BOUND 2. Sample heavy and humorous track accompanied by Charlie Wilson takes a nilist approach to marriage parodied by the soft core porn music video. By the end of Yeezus we reach the conclusion Kanye had been screaming at us:he is a God. And us mortals can only watch as he moulds culture in his hands. Kanye sounds at his most angered, most torn down by the entertainment industry and previous love affairs, more so than on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The production ranges from grimy electro, to minimalists tribal drums, and fantastic samples.The transformation Kanye West has taken throughout his hip-hop career has all led to this 40 minute, sprawling descent into industry hell. Kanye sounds at his most angered, most torn down by the entertainment industry and previous love affairs, more so than on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The production ranges from grimy electro, to minimalists tribal drums, and fantastic samples. Kanye's lyrics are his most deranged on Yeezus, rhymes upon rhymes about how he feels as if he is a slave in in the entertainment industry and all the scum he encounters throughout his day to day life. Not to mention his view on previous relationships, something he's been singing about since 808's & Heartbreaks. If there's one complaint to be had about this record, it's that it loses replay value if you've listened to it at least 5 times, which is true for any album really, but more so if comparing it to other Kanye West records.

    All In All, Yeezus is about a black man on the brink of insanity, pushing through day to day demons that probably will never escape him, and also a fantastic, dark voyage of hip-hop music. A-    … Expand

    It's a true delight to see such a valuable artist recognized for his contribution to hip-hop & rap trying to reach new genres, to fuse several influences and craft something as gritty and powerful as this album is.

    The production is top notch. How could it be any different considering the tremendous amount of amazing producers and artists involved in the creation of 'Yeezus' ?     The production is top notch. How could it be any different considering the tremendous amount of amazing producers and artists involved in the creation of 'Yeezus' ? Daft Punk's presence is insane, they should have collaborate more often together. Add their level of mastery to those of Travis Scott, Arca and Hudson Mohawke (and by extension of TNGHT) and you'll get this raw and colourful album. Despite all these glorious names I enjoy how Kanye is the common denominator of his album: it seems like he made all the choices for himself and for this product to be delivered the way it is. He surely did not fail to step up.

    Lyrics are okay. As always, some interesting and reflective bars from Ye, and obviously CyHi The Prynce should have helped him a lot on this side. But also very awkward and weird ones or even just dumb repetitive. Kid Cudi's vocals are okay, clearly not as strong as hiw own presence is. Assassin's parts are terrible, he totally denote with the rest of the record, he is just incomprehensible. Kanye's vocal performances let a lot to be desired on some almost unbearable parts.

    Themes addressed are okay too: we start to know Kanye pretty well, and it seems impossible for him to craft any project without tackling issues as sex, money, racism or his mom. Here we obviously have all of those subjects. Clearly we can guess this album was another major step to Kanye's disproportionate narcissism and ego. Yet I have to bow down before the originality of the approach. Interesting experience.    … Expand

    This album is so underrated by the internet, so its great to see critics give it a decent rating. Yeezus is produced to intentionally be dirty and sound unproduced. I love it because it really represents how crazy Kanye West has become as an artist, and how little he cares about his audience. As usual, he has some great metaphors and sick rhymes that emphasize the points he makes about racism.

    Through eletronic appeal and abstract beats, it's notable Death Grips' influence here, but Yeezus hasn't a less impressive production for that reason, each texture is very well selected.

Kanye West got subsequently worse after My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, with his Jay-Z collaboration Watch The Throne being more back to the roots, yet still awesome and his record’s group album Cruel Summer being not much more than well-made fun for the summer with tons of prominent guestsHow can you adequately follow up to the greatest hip hop album in music history? His newest release Yeezus is anything but spectacular just look at its cover. And if West’s Saturday Night Live performance of ‘New Slaves’ and ‘Black Skinhead’ induced you to think that his much anticipated 6th studio album is completely different to his former releases, it’s not either. He was clearly experimenting with beats when he made the album and some Daft Punk productions are quite unique in hip hop, admittedly; but his rap style, which is the topmost in a hip hop album, has stayed very similar to earlier releases. What is it then that still makes it a great album? It’s actually the fact that it isn’t anything new. The Chicago rapper mixes every single one of styles he had in his rap career into this album, meaning The College Dropout’s and Late Registration’s pun- and wordplay-laden lyrics, 808’s & Heartbreak whining, poetic lyrics and Autotune effects, and MBDTF’s epic atmosphere. And seriously, there isn’t anything bad with that because there’s something for everyone included in Yeezus: However, a bit more uniqueness wouldn’t have derogated the record, that’s for sure. Basically, the album may be disappointing just because it isn’t as colossal as ‘Ye’s former albums, but doesn’t lack anything that would make it a great hip hop record. It should seamlessly fit in in your Yeezy CD collection at home and even if it may take some listens to get accustomed to it, you will like it eventually. Yeezus is an original, unconventional, and adventurous hip hop album like you’ve never seen one before. He tries a lot of new things with his music and although he doesn’t succeed every time, it’s great fun to listen to his musical mixture of feelings. Just think of the majestic beats and Justin Vernon’s grand guest parts how can you not love that?… Expand

    A mixed bag with a lot of forgettable tracks but also a few incredible moments. It's abrasive, odd and rough around the edges. It is also the first time in Kanye's career where he was notably not ahead of the pack artistically, drawing major influence from groups like Death Grips, but it was still an interesting and necessary piece to his legendary discography.

    I'll admit that I've only recently gotten into this guy's work around the time this album came out & I was pretty much blown away. However there seems to be an inverse pattern of Kanye's production getting better & more experimental while the lyrical content gets increasingly worse. And with Yeezus that pattern continues.

    Admittedly about 90% of the good thing I have to say are in the    I'll admit that I've only recently gotten into this guy's work around the time this album came out & I was pretty much blown away. However there seems to be an inverse pattern of Kanye's production getting better & more experimental while the lyrical content gets increasingly worse. And with Yeezus that pattern continues.

    Admittedly about 90% of the good thing I have to say are in the production & instrumentation. If you're reading this, chances are you've already heard about the bizarre change in direction here to something less accessible & more raw, and that'd be a great way of describing it in a nutshell. It's dark, minimalist, straightforward & aggressive in the best ways possible. The lush, drawn-out & practically orchestrated sound of MBDTF was great to hear but this is an extremely rewarding change of pace. That's not to say this album is without its subtle catchiness, since even in his earliest albums Kanye's had a talent for creating great hooks, not just in some pop chorus but in the instrumentals too. The synths might be buzzing & droning but there's still a keen sense of melody in how they're arranged that makes them stick out in a unique way. Same can be said for the samples, which are generally well-incorporated. The 2 tracks that stand out musically for me the most though are lead single “Black Skinhead” & closing track “Bound 2”. The former is just awesome, combining pulsating tribal drum beats, primal screams in the background & quiet synths in the chorus that builds expertly with the drums back into the verse. The latter is my, and what I imagine a lot of people's, favorite song on this album. This is mainly due to the soul sample-looping back-to-basics approach that was all over Kanye's first few albums, aka the “college trilogy”, helped by the comparatively more genuine lyrics. There's also “New Slaves”, probably the strongest track lyrically, which gives some insightful jabs at the materialism that brainwashes the upper class, as well as overly intrusive “journalists” that constantly hassle him & other celebrities for no good reason.

    However, no matter how great this album may be musically & occasionally lyrically, those lyrical moments are few & far between. For the most part in this department, Yeezus is obnoxious, egomaniacal, hypocritical & at times outright cringeworthy. I think the main problem isn't so much that he's not self-aware about the public's perception about him, but for that he's not self-aware about how poorly he expresses his self-awareness about the public's perception about him. He's so hot-headed & over-the-top about the topic that it can only add to his already bad media persona. Say what you want about the braggadocios tracks on MBDTF or the 2011 Jay-Z collab album Watch the Throne, but at least there he sounded like he was having some level of fun with it in a way that was at times pretty enjoyable in its ridiculousness. But here the way he brushes off detractors & brags about how much sex he has is just forced & uncomfortable. And sometimes this can ruin an otherwise good track, particularly “I'm in It”, which pairs a nice slow groove & a soulful chorus from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon with poetry like “Eatin' Asian all I need is sweet & sour sauce”. And even one of my favorites “Black Skinhead” has its bad lyrical traits, but in a different way. The main thing is that in a song where he's talking about racially inequality & stereotypes, he acts angry and irrational, brags about his possessions & says lines like “300 where the Trojans”. There's a clever line here & there but I find it hard to get past that. Surprisingly one of the more positively notable tracks is “I Am A God”, which despite its obvious pretentious delusions is more of an exaggerated declaration of confidence than anything else, and brings back the enjoyable ego-projecting of the last couple albums.

    With even that big ol rant out of the way, I still can't recommend checking this album out enough. Yes, it's as a whole Kanye's weakest effort to date lyrically & very front-loaded, but it's just so interesting & engaging musically that it's worth a listen even despite its big flaws. I still like his older stuff more though.

    I'm a big Kanye fan and Kanye certainly delivered here. This is not a hip hop album, but rather a musical exercise where Kanye experiments with anything and everything at his disposal. Despite this mish mash of sounds, the album is extremely successful and in my mind, it's a modern day classic, much like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was. It will be interesting to see what kind ofI'm a big Kanye fan and Kanye certainly delivered here. Quite a departure from past Kanye albums as has always been the case. His lyrics are not the tightest in comparision, but I love how this album pushes hip hop in another direction.     Dull, boring and pathetic and that's just Kanye. This is quite possibly one of the worst excuses for an album though to be fair none of his albums are awful so this is no surprise.

    The production is completely out of this world. It is not because it is overly experimental, but rather incredibly ambitious. It succeeds in everything it tries to do and then some. My only complaint would be the lyrics that aren't up to par with some of Kanye's previous work.

    Put simply if you don't like this album, you're a hater. The production is truly legendary, and anyone who says the album doesn't have meaning or is narcissistic didn't listen well. Yeezus is a true work of art and will go down as a revolutionary album in the increasingly electronic music world.

As a pure hip-hop fan, I was a little bit disappointed by the album, because it's more an alternative electronic experience than a rap album, but forCertainly not as good as his previous one, but still highly enjoyable, Yeezus is another great album by Kanye. It's an interesting and original blend of sounds, styles and influences from around the music industry with Kanye's unique touch.     Yeezus is not an unenjoyable album but I have a fair few issues with the content on it, as well as the way it's been glorified as some envelope pushing masterpiece. It's just not that. Yeezus may have introduced a lot more people to noise hop as a genre but I don't think taking a sound over a decade old and giving it a more mainstream appeal is at all envelope pushing. It's like Death Grips who seem to get all the praise for this exciting new kind of music, which is why noise hop fans, like Moodie Black, get annoyed when people just assume Death Grips are the first noise hop band ever and everyone else is just copying them. It's exactly the same thing with Kanye's Yeezus and at times it makes want to hate the album. Its bad enough hundreds of thousands of people, possibly millions, think that this is groundbreaking; it's made worse by the fact that it's a half assed effort. I dare anyone to argue he put his all into this. I guess I'm happy that Kanye experimented with this sound but I would be a lot happier if he introduced it to people well because after hearing the Lil Wayne level lyrics to songs like 'I'm In It' it would just seem like the new horror core with lyrics that try too hard to be shocking. Kanye West could have actually created a very dark album with this but he completely ruins the mood created by the beats with dumb lyrics. On the final song the production takes a very unexpected turn towards a College Dropout era sound but sadly Kanye doesn't take that same trip back with his lyrics. Despite all of that there is, like I said, some very dark production on here and a great mixture of raw drums and dark synths on a few songs. Most of my favourite songs were produced with the help of Daft Punk- most notably the messy futuristic sounding opener 'On Sight'- which has for 3 years left me dreaming of some kind of full length collaboration between the two artists that'll almost definitely never happen. But still, I can dream can't I?

While not his best album, it certainly ranks among the best. The sounds he used, though grungy, serve as a musical means for him toYes this album is a big curveball from Kanye West. As an artist West moves back and forth from the early 00's hip-hop that put him on the household map, but unlike its incredible predecessor Yeezus doesn't move far enough in a particular direction to warrant overwhelming acclaim nor deserve condemnation (a 0? Who are you kidding?) for itsKanye West's 6th solo album is something of an initial 'Kid A' reception inspired industrial mess. As an artist West moves back and forth from the early 00's hip-hop that put him on the household map, but unlike its incredible predecessor Yeezus doesn't move far enough in a particular direction to warrant overwhelming acclaim nor deserve condemnation (a 0? Who are you kidding?) for its failings. Instead Yeezus is a fairly competent album that attempts to stitch together all of Kanye's styles up to this point and it doesn't always work. Blood on The Leaves samples Nina Simone's soulful 'Strange Fruit' in an off-shoot that could have been a B-Side on Late Registration whilst closer Bound 2 has more in common with The College Dropout than any of West's more recent material. These contrasts in quality are often found in style, and the albums first half is by far its strongest, yielding schizophrenic beats and idiosyncratic lyrics. Although I agree the production of Daft Punk (considering their potential) is perhaps wasted, tracks like 'Black Skinhead' and opener 'On Sight' are far and away the most interesting works here though far from entirely original. Other all Yeezus is still a succinct and more consistent listen than '808's' or 'Graduation', but the lyrical depth and egotistical ravings although perhaps designed to contrast the juvenile substances with the poetic are misjudged in crucial moments and apart from Frank Ocean his guest line-up squandered. Still, even if it does not match up to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in scale or scope, it is far from unlistenable as others have stated, and fits in with the Kanye discography for now.… Expand

    A very different type of Hip Hop album. One of the year best album. Kanye West returns with an excellent album Daft Punk and Kanye West makes a great team. This album is very short but every song is worth listening to.

    This isn't his best album...but it still an outstanding album and deserve Grammys buzz. I love how kanye didn't out out any singles for the album. Very brilliant album ....I must say this is the most interesting album he made. I'll always love his first two album more than his new album but I wouldn't be surprise if some people label this album as his best yet.

    The thing I disliked about the album is the features ....I never been a fan of albums with too many features but that just me... This album is worth listening to,,, it's better to listen to the album from track 1-10 with out skipping songs the first few times.    … Expand

The attitude of the song "I'm A God" and "New Slaves" nails it. Kanye West has himself said that "New Slaves" is the best rap song of all time, and even it is. No doubt!     I used to hate this, took a year and a half to realize how great this is.

    I don't like this album, I don't get the appeal of this album, and I don't get the people saying this is the best Kanye West album. It's not, it's one of his worst. Yes, it is experimental and industrial, which typically are things I like about an album, however, this is the first time Kanye wasn't innovative or coming up with anything new, this industrial, experimental hip hop movementI don't like this album, I don't get the appeal of this album, and I don't get the people saying this is the best Kanye West album. Yes, it is experimental and industrial, which typically are things I like about an album, however, this is the first time Kanye wasn't innovative or coming up with anything new, this industrial, experimental hip hop movement started a couple of years earlier by people like Death Grips. A lot of songs on this albums seem filler and not too well put together. If the beat is good, the lyrics aren't. Bound 2 for instance, amazing beat, loved what he was going for with the love song for Kim, however the lyrics aren't romantic at all, it's just kinda embarassing. His flow is also pretty bad. My favorite track on Yeezus is Black Skinhead, but even that has its flaws, I'm sure everyone who has heard it knows what I'm talking about: "Keep it 300, like the romans. 300 **** where the trojans?" 300 was a movie about Greece. Troy is in Greece which is correct I guess, but by mentioning Rome he ruined the wordplay. All in all a pretty dissapointing album not worthy of its praise.… Expand
