...this forawrd-thinking veteran now sounds comfortable melding his adventurous fret work with studio wizardry. [2/9/01, p.78]

Guitar-heads will automatically buy this, but it also deserves to reach any audiences excited by imaginative music working outside commercial boundaries.
  4. Most of the new disc sounds like noisy grooves in search of songs, and the mechanical accompaniment makes the accomplished jazz-rock fusion of such mid-1970s Beck classics as Blow by Blow and Wired sound downright earthy.
  5. There's no doubt that his fingers still know their way around the fretboard.
  6. What's missing is the modern edge that would give Beck's fiery playing a better context. Too often, the techno-funk rhythm driving the action here sounds stiffly electronic, like a Chemical Brothers castoff from the Nineties.
  7. Length considerations aside, only die-hard Beck devotees and studio nerds are likely to be dazzled by the dithering, technoed-out proceedings here.

The only guitarist still striving to go beyond the guitars limitations. Bravo Mr. Beck.
