Trey Songz and The-Dream can gripe on tracks about smart phones and Omarion can make a run for dancehall licks, but Kehlani’s pulling all these ideas together into something that feels original and authentic and, somehow just slightly transgressive.

She's clearly making her own way, unafraid to knock suitors down a couple pegs ("How That Taste"), allowing her vulnerability to shine through ("You Should Be Here"), and affirming her individuality.

It's an intense, focused exploration of all, or nearly all, the relationships the singer is involved in, both romantic and familial.

Where this album excels is in the celebration of youth’s insecurities and dichotomies.

It’s this unabashed ambition that makes You Should Be Here resonate long after one has internalized its motivational urges ("Can't nobody love somebody that do not love themselves") and tender observations on the mechanics of relationships (see the wistful "Unconditional").

Kehlani’s second self-released album, there’s a calm swagger that underpins even the most anguished of these songs. She easily channels the attitude and swing of mid-1990s R&B girl groups.

Given her age, you canFans of Neo-Soul artists (i.e. Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill) will be doing themselves a favor by giving Kehlani a try. Given her age, you can expect that her brand of songwriting is a product of contemporary rap, but her music is better for it. The grit of her lyrics has only served to deepen the emotional depth of her voice, which is as powerful an instrument as one could desire from an R&B artist. Her vocal manipulation is easy on part with the most prominent artists of the 2010's (i.e. Beyonce, Rihanna). Please do not pass on this treat. "You Should Be Here" is truly a statement of where her genre should aspire to be: where she is. Expand

This girl can really sing, and she has a very uplifting and positive message in her music. From top to bottom very strong production, and varies her subject matter to things beyond heartbreak and relationships, which is unique for a Gen-Y R&B artist. You can really feel her pain and her emotion through the both the content and her vocal delivery. She's only 20 years old too, so best believe we're going to be seeing a whole lot of her for the foreseeable future. Expand
