Hort.), and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (DipHort). Apprentice gardener, Parks Department, Ilkley (1964-68), Supervisor, Staff Training, Royal Botanic gardens (1972-74), Assistant Editor, gardening books, Hamlyn Publishing (1974-76), Assistant Editor and department Editor, Amatuer Gardening (1976-79), freelance writer and broadcaster(1979-)

Alan resides with his wife Alison, daughters Polly & Camilla, two yellow Labradors -Grace & Favour, two cats- Spud & Hector, and an assortment of chickens, ducks, and goldfish in Hampshire, UK.
