From South Carolina, MacDowell had to make her own way. She spent some teenage years in low-wage jobs, including McDonalds and Pizza Hut, then dropped out of Winthrop College to become an Elite model. Until then, she had been called Rose MacDowell, but the modelling agency reinvented her as Andie. In her early twenties, she lived in Paris. She first hit national awareness in Calvin Klein television commercials. These led to her being cast in Greystoke (1984), but the producers called in Glenn Close to dub MacDowell's lines. With her performance as an unhappy wife in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) she arrived as a Hollywood leading lady.
MacDowell's first marriage, to Paul Qualley, ended in divorce in 1999 after thirteen years. They have three children, a son, Justin, born in 1986, and two daughters, Rainey (1989) and Sarah (1995). On 10 November 2001, MacDowell married Rhett Hartzog, a jeweller she had known in school. However, they separated and were divorced in 2004, and she married thirdly Kevin Geagan, a North Carolina car dealer. She was chosen by People magazine as one of the Fifty Most Beautiful People in the World, and is also an honorary Doctor of Letters of Lander University, South Carolina.
