Aries grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin with three younger siblings. During his schooldays he participated in multiple sports such as football, baseball, and wrestling. His success in baseball as a left-handed center field pitcher lead him to earned several scholarships. Aries attended Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota where he began studying Communications only to later change his major to Psychology. While at WSU he worked as a bartender for the American Legion. After spending several years at university he dropped out and became the lead singer in a band called “Zeno’s Revenge” before becoming a professional wrestler.
Aries made his ROH (Ring of Honor) main show debut April 24, 2004 at ROH: Reborn Stage 2 in Chicago Ridge, Illinois. In May 2004 Aries joined a stable started by Alex Shelley called “Generation Next” which also included Roderick Strong and Jack Evans. Aries Later gained the ROH World Championship by defeating Samoa Joe at Final Battle 2004 on December 26, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
Aries won an Internet poll to face the TNA X Division Champion Christopher Daniels in a non-title match at Sacrifice 2005 pay-per-view event on August 14. The poll offered the choice of Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Jay Lethal, and Matt Sydal none of which had appeared with the company on a regular basis or where contract by TNA. It was announce on Aries website on September 22, 2005 that he had been offered a contract by TNA and was expect to sign it. He became a regular member of the TNA rooster and formed a stable with former “Generation Next” partners Alex Shelley and Roderick Strong. In February 2006 Strong and Aries where set to face The Naturals at Against All Odds pay-per-view which they arrived four hours late for. Strong and Aries had attended a ROH show in Long Island even though TNA’s request to skip it because of potential snowstorm. Even though they made it in time for their match both Strong and Aries where suspended for two months for their actions. At Bound for Glory 2006 Aries returned as a new wrestler called Austin Starr with the Slogan “A Star is Born”. Starr went on to win the “Kevin Nash Open Invitational X Division Gauntlet Battle Royal” the night of his Debut.
