Biography: Hawaiian-born Bette Midler remains one of the most revered multi-talented performers in entertainment. The actress, comedian, and singer, who has had international record hits and has achieved box office successes with 1979's The Rose (as a drug-addicted, Janis Joplin-esque rock star), the drama, Beaches (1988), and in 1991, as a 1940s singer/actress in For the Boys, made a name for herself electrifying the towel-clad gay clientele of the Continental Baths with Barry Manilow backing her on piano. Bette constructed the larger-than-life persona of The Divine Miss M (also the title of her 1972 debut album for Atlantic Records) and built her career on outrageousness, yet the bawdy, red-haired performer with the wide, toothsome smile also balanced the camp by interspersing a few tears for the human spirit amidst the sequins and fringes.
