Claudia Karvan

Biography: Claudia was born in Sydney Australia on May 19th 1972. Her name derives from her Greek stepfather and it was originally Karvaniardos. However, his family changed the name to Karvan when they immigrated to Australia. Her natural father is English. She grew up in a rather bohemian life style with her parents running a nightclub in Kings Cross, Sydney. In interviews about her youth, she has described herself as being a Saffy styled daughter from the television comedy Absolutely Fabulous.
Her acting career began at an early age when she appeared in Molly in 1983, a tale about a singing fox terrier. Since then, she has been seen regularly on television screens and is a household name to many Australians. In 1987 she made Echoes of Paradise with Wendy Hughes and Peta Tepano and she later went on to appear in G.P. where she won the Australian Film Award for Best Actress. Other credits include: Redheads in 1992, Strange Planet with Naomi Watts and Hugo Weaving and Dating The Enemy

Despite offers from Hollywood, Karvan has chosen to remain in her native Australia. At the age of 22 she met and fell in love with Jeremy Sparks, a film construction manager. She has two children and is step mother to Jeremy's daughter from a previous relationship.
