Eileen Herlie

Biography: Eileen Herlie, a life-long fiery Scot was born in Glasgow in March, 1920. Best known and loved as Myrtle Lum Fargate on All My Children, she made her professional debut with the Scottish National Players in 1938. In 1948 Eileen played Laurence Olivier's mother, Queen Gertrude in his acclaimed film of Hamlet. An amazing achievement, not only for her acting ability, but for the fact that she was some 13 years younger than Olivier at the time. She also played Gertrude opposite Richard Burton on Broadway in 1964, with direction by Sir John Gielgud. Her theatre career was long and varied. She was nominated for a Tony Award in 1960 for the musical Take Me Along, in which she starred with Jackie Gleason. In 1976 she joined the company of All My Children, and has four times been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award (Outstanding Supporting Actress, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986.) Eileen Herlie is beloved by her fellow cast members on All My Children and treasured for her abilities, her laughter, and indomitable spirit.
