Biography: One of the most famous movie celebrities in the world, Jackie Chan was born to a poor family in China on April 7, 1954. After he was born, his parents thought about giving him up for adoption since they could not afford the hospital bill. His parents eventually kept him and worked hard to raise him in Hong Kong and in Australia when they relocated. When he turned seven, he was enrolled in China Drama Academy and studied there for ten years. Their strict ways and the education they provided helped Jackie Chan become one of the great action stars the entertainment world has seen. He was introduced into acting as a stuntman in Bruce Lee movies. Chan appeared in several Hong Kong-made films before breaking through in the United States during the late '70s. He then became Asia's highest paid actor after being signed with Golden Harvest. Besides acting in his films, Chan has also acted as a director, cinematographer, producer, writer, and stunt coordinator. However, his difficulty with speaking English and poor promotion of his films in the US kept him from becoming a true Hollywood icon, not until the late '90s rolled along when he made the comedy hits Rush Hour with Chris Tucker, Shanghai Noon and their sequels.
