On the night of October 23, 1983, they drove to Pennsylvania to dine at Chez Odette. The restaurant was situated on the old locks of the Delaware Canal.
After dinner, her date got confused about the driveway leaving the eatery and their car ended up upsode down at the bottom of one of those locks. Savitch apparently made frantic efforts to get out before drowing. She was only 36 years old.
A popular Lifetime TV movie was made about Savitch's life. It starred Sela Ward. Another movie, starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer was supposed to be about Savitch, but in the end Up Close and Personal beared little to no resemblance.
