John Tartaglia

Biography: John Tartaglia is an singer, actor, dancer and "Muppeteer." He was born in Maple Shade, New Jersey on February 16, 1978. He claims to have been "performing since he was a fetus - where other babies were content with passive kicking, John would Kick, Shuffle, Turnstep followed by four Hop Turns and an A-Step for good measure." He came from a family very invovled in show biz - his mom was an actress, dad a pianist, grandmother a singer, stepmom a director, and grandather a clow. John always knew he was going to be in preforming himself. He would often reenact scenes from "The Magical Garden" television show and put on a solo production of "Fiddler on the Roof." When he was 8, his dad took him to New York, and he fell in love with the Muppets. He wrote to Jim Henson at the age of 12, asking for a job. When he was 16, he began working part time on Sesame street as many minor characters including the backup for Elmo. He played Ernie for the second sesaon of Play with Me Sesame and Oscar the Grouch for Sesame Street 4D. John graduated from Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. and joined Sesame Street full-time at the age of 18 and is still there today. In spite of his devotion to Sesame Street, John is best known for making his Broadway debut originating the roles of Princeton, a green (well, actually orange) college graduate, and Rod, a "closeted homo-whatever," in the Broadway musical Avenue Q. He was with the show from the very beginning and is still somewhat attached to it. He received a 2004 Tony Nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2004, which he lost to Hugh Jaskman and won the 59th Annual Clarence Derwent Award. John was asked to host or appear in the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS benefit, the Broadway Bares show, the Easter Bonnet benefit, New Faces of Broadway at Carnegie Hall (with costar Stephanie D'Abruzzo), the local Emmys, Ars Nova Broadway Spotlight, Hollywood Squares (with Rod) and a Neil Sedaka tribute. He was the first original cast member to leave the show on January 30, 2005 to open the Las Vegas version (costars Rick Lyon and Stephanie D'Abruzzo came back to Broadway after opening the Las Vegas show, John did not). The roles have been covered by Barrett Foa, the original understudy, since. However, John's vocals can still be heard onstage at Avenue Q - he and the rest of the original cast recorded their voices for the "Avenue Q Theme Song." John has been in many Broadway benefits in including the 14th annual Broadway Bares and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In early 2006, he preformed in the Off-Broadway musical
"Newsical 2006: The Next Edition" and a Hair benefit concert. He was a presenter at last years Tony awards as well. John has a one man show he preformed in bars entitled "John Tartaglia AD-LIBerty."John currently lives in New York and is creating, starring in, and producing his own Playhouse House Disney show - Johhny and the Sprites. The episodes are currently only 5 minutes long, but the show will be a full 30-minute series in late 2006. John is gay, as are all the actors who have played Princeton and Rod after him. He recently preformed at a Connecticut retreat for gay and lesbian kids - True Colors.
