Jonathan Hyde

Biography: It is quite easy to name a film with Jonathan Hyde in it: "The Mummy", "Anaconda", "Jumanji", "Richie Rich", "Titanic", "The Tailor of Panama". Though not well-known by name outside Britain and her commonwealths, Jonathan Hyde - with his snide, debonair accent and very British air (if you know what I mean) - is easily recognizable, and is one of Britain's best character actors. Hyde was born in Brisbane of Australian parents. After first gaining several roles on television series and/or miniseries, Hyde got his first role as Rosencrantz in a made-for-TV version of "Hamlet". Like many other actors, however, Hyde is just as, if not more, successful in theater. His first important stagework was as a member of the Glasgow Citizens' Company (later Glasgow Citzens' Theatre) in the mid-1970s. He is now a member of both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre to great acclaim in Britain. His roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company include: The Alchemist Anthony and Cleopatra (1984), Octavius Caesar As You Like It, Oliver Columbus Julius Caesar King Lear, Edgar MacBeth, Porter Merchant of Venice, Bassanio Richard II, Aumerle The Roaring Girl (1984), Laxton Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio Swansdown Gloves (1982), Nightwork Tis a Pity She's a Whore (1991), Vasquez His more notable performances with the Royal National Theatre: Sleep With Me (1999), Charles The Duchess of Malfi (1985), Duke Ferdinand of Calabria The Critic (1985), Mr. Sneer The Real Inspector Hound (1985), Major Magnus Muldoon The Cherry Orchard (1985), Yasha He has also appeared in opera productions of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Cast of Charles Dexter Ward", and "A Night In Old Peking". After gaining the role of Edward Marshall Hall on the television series Shadow of the Noose (in '88), Hyde's film career took off. He appeared in numerous other TV shows and made-for-TV productions in the early '90s, most notably as Joseph Goebells in The Plot To Kill Hitler. In the mid to late '90s, Hyde has also enjoyed steady film work, appearing in such blockbusters as Titanic, Anaconda, and The Mummy. He resides in Devon, England. Expand
