Lasse Hallstrom

Biography: Lasse Hallstrom, born Lars Sven Hallstrom on June 2, 1946, in Stockholm, Sweden, is a noted Swedish filmmaker. Hallstrom got his start working as a music video director, most notably with the band ABBA during the 1970s and early 1980s. In the early 1970s, he also began making feature films in Sweden, gaining international attention in 1985 for his film My Life As a Dog. He continued to work in Sweden after that for a short time, before deciding to work almost exclusively in the American film industry. His first success came in 1993 with the critically acclaimed film What's Eating Gilbert Grape. In 1999, Hallstrom's career would reach a new height when his film The Cider House Rules received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The next year, Hallstrom's film Chocolat also received the same honor. Hallstrom has been married on two occasions. In 1994, he married his second wife, the actress Lena Olin.
