Biography: May 23, 1958 saw the birth of Lea to Robert and Jerry Delaria. Her father was a social worker and jazz pianist who instilled early in his daughter a love for jazz music; her mother was a homemaker. Lea went to a Catholic school, but her studies did not drive her to stay in the closet. Right after finishing High School, she toured with a company performing Godspell. As early as 1982, Lea performed as an openly gay comedian after her move to San Francisco. Sadly though her openness did lead to an estrangement from her parents for 5 years. The late 1980s saw her move to Massachusetts where she concentrated on working on her act as a comedian and her jazz singing. Wherever she passes, Lea makes an impression: she was the first gay comedian to appear on American national television (The Arsenio Hall Show). Being a comedian is not where her career has stopped: Lea has appeared in television shows, movies, on the stage, has had CDs produced and even penned a book.
