Biography: Lewis Carroll (whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his degree in Mathematics. He remained at Oxford as a young don and clergyman and became fond of the children of the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell. Alice was his favourite, and he made up stories for her which were published under the pen-name of Lewis Carroll as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This led on to Alice Through the Looking-Glass. He also wrote verse and books on logic, mathematics, games and puzzles. In 1881 he gave up his work at Oxford and became a country clergyman. He never married.
