Macy Gray

Biography: Macy Gray was born on September 6, 1967 in Canton, Ohio. While attending college at the University of Southern California, Gray got the opportunity by chance to sing on some demo tapes for a friend. This led to her getting the opportunity to sing at jazz cafes in Los Angeles, and then to her signing by Atlantic Records in 1994. She was dropped from Atlantic after the departure of her A&R man in 1996, but in 1998 she was signed with Epic Records. Her debut album, On How Life Is, was released in 1999 and became a worldwide hit with the release of the second single "I Try". The single won Gray a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her second album, The Id, was unsuccessful in the US but reached number one on the UK album chart. Her third and fourth albums, The Trouble with Being Myself (2003) and Big (2007), were more successful, with several songs featuring on movie soundtracks. Her fifth album, The Sellout, was released in 2010 to mixed reviews. Gray is noted for her distinctively gravelly voice, and her singing style is much-influenced by Billie Holliday. She has three children.
