Mary Margaret Helgenberger was born on November 16th, 1958 to Kay Snyder and Hugh Helgenberger. She grew up in a farming town in Nebraska along with her older sister named Ann and younger brother Curt. She attended North Bend Central High School, where she played the french horn in their marching band. Marg began her college education at Kearney State College, then transferred to Northwestern University in Chicago where she majored in speech and drama. While acting in school production The Taming of the Shrew, she was discovered by a talent scout for the ABC soap opera Ryan's Hope. After finishing college Marg joined the show in 1982, where she stayed until 1986. While working on Ryan's Hope Marg met her future husband Alan Rosenberg, who she married in 1989. On October 21st, 1990, their only son, Hugh Howard Rosenberg (named after Marg's father) was born.
In 1988, Marg was cast in another ABC show, the primetime drama China Beach, which she starred in throughout its 4-season run until 1991. In 1989, Marg made her film debut with a role in After Midnight, in which her real-life husband Alan Rosenberg played a man trying to murder her.
Throughout the 1990s Marg had guest roles on several TV shows and appeared in a number of movies, including Species and Species II. Then in 2000 she landed the starring role of Catherine Willows on CBS's top-notch drama CSI, where she has been ever since. Marg separated from her husband Alan Rosenberg (who at that time was the president of the Screen Actors Guild) in 2008. She filed for divorce the following year on December 21st, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason, and their marriage was officially ended on February 10th, 2010.… Expand
