Marton Csokas

Biography: Marton was born on June 30th 1966, in New Zealand. Growing up in New Zealand, his mother would send him and his brother to work on various farms to sheer sheep, make hay, milk cows, ride motorbikes and tractors- a typical rural upbringing. He didn't discover his passion for the stage and screen until his late teens. While studying literature and art history for a year at Canterbury and Christchurch, Csokas became involved with a writer's club and theater company, and he went on to graduate from the New Zealand Drama School in 1989. He embarked on his career on stage, first at the Taki Rua/Depot's Te Whaunau A Tuanui Jones. He soon portrayed the scholar Septimus in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, the ambiguous Joe Pitt in Tony Kusher's Angels in America, as well as appearing in the productions of Brian Friel's Dancing in Lughnasa, David Hare's Amy's View, Patrick Marber's Closer, which won him the Chapman Tripp Theatre Award for Production of the Year, and finally Steven Berkoff's Kvetch. His talent for classical work was seen in numerous productions, including the Shakespearen roles of Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Brutus in Julius Caesar and Orsino in the romantic comedy Twelfth Night, as well as performing in Chekhov's Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard and Bertolt Brecht's Happy End.
He then co-founded the The Stronghold Theater. He then co-founded the The Stronghold Theater.

Steadily gaining experience working in commercials and as a music presenter, what Marton really wanted to do was cal-stage drama, but he was becoming more and more in demand on the screen. He landed a role in the television series Shortland Street before making his feature debut as Dennis in Jack Brown Genius (1994).

He then went on to play Dr. Leonard Rossi-Dodds in the NZ soap opera, Shortland Street, where he remained for 2 years. After leaving the soap, he worked in theater and short films including the awarded Twilight of the Gods and Game with no rules and in the internationally successful feature Broken English.

In 1996, working with Renaissance Pictures, he got the part of Tarlus in the episode "Promises" of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Soon after that he got the parts of Khrafstar and Borias in the third season of Xena:Warrior Princess. He reprised the role of Borias in other 5 episodes including the series finale.

He guest starred in many other shows produced down under such as Farscape, Cleopatra 2525, Water Rats and Beastmaster.

Marton was cast as Celeborn in the Lord of the Rings movies and as the voice of Poggle the Lesser in Star Wars Episode II. He had at least 5 movies to be released in a single year, including Down and Under with Jerry O'Connell, Garage Days directed by Alex Proyas and XXX with Vin Diesel.

Marton has also written the play Frontmen.

When he's not on location, Marton makes his home either in London or Los Angeles, and he enjoys living a gypsy lifestyle. At just over 40 years old, he remains a bachelor, and has not been publicly romantically linked with anyone. According to Linda Herrick of the New Zealand Herald, Marton "announced several years ago he was pansexual, meaning anything goes."
