Biography: Born in New York City on December 12, 1975, Mekhi Phifer was raised in Harlem by schoolteacher and single mother Rhoda Phifer. He graduated in 1994 from Lincoln Square Auxiliary Services High School and planned on going to college to study electrical engineering. He also had aspirations of becoming a rap star. In fact, he had a deal in place with Warner Brothers records when he decided to go to an open casting call for Spike Lee's 1995 film Clockers. In spite of the fact that he had no formal acting training, he beat out a thousand other hopefuls and was picked for the lead role of the young drug pusher Strike. His performance was critically lauded and Phifer found his rapping and college plans put aside as he was thrust headlong into the world of acting.
