Mike Nichols

Biography: Having leapt to fame in the late 1950s as a satirical comedian in partnership with Elaine May, Mike Nichols turned director in the early 60s with phenomenal success on Broadway - "Barefoot In The Park", "Luv" and "The Odd Couple", his first three Broadway plays, all ran for years. His first movie, in 1966, was far more serious - "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?", based on the Edward Albee play, was perhaps the most highly-praised American film of its year and a great box-office hit. His second film, some eighteen months later, dwarfed the success of this debut, however - "The Graduate" won Nichols an Oscar as best director and was nothing less than a history-making phenomenon, still hugely popular today and finding new admirers with each succeeding generation. Nichols has always worked both in theatre and cinema, and in the twenty-first century has also become a television director - his TV movies based on the plays "Wit" and "Angels In America" have been much acclaimed and won awards.
