Jason Newsted was the bassist for Metallica after the tragic death of Cliff Burton, from 1986-2001. He is now a member of Voivod and Rockstar Supernova.
Jason first preformance with Metallica was on November 8th, 1986 in Reseda, CA. In order to acclimate Jason to Metallica, they quickly recorded an album entirely of cover songs. Newsted's offical debut was Metallica's fourth studio album ...And Justics for All.
He uses a four string bass with a pick. This is because while learning to play his first bass he had no amp. So he used a pick to amplify the sound. But he does, on occasions, use his fingers. He is shown on the videos for One, King Nothing, Nothing Else Matters, and also on the fretless acoustic bass that was used for The Unforgiven.
Newsted left Metallica in January 2001 and joined Canadian metal band Voivod in 2002. The last song he played with Metallica was 'Fade to Black' at the VH1 Music Awardsn and he knew at the time it would be the last song he would play with the band. In 2003, Newsted was chosen by Ozzy Osbourne to replace Robert Trujillo (who left to join Metallica) for Ozzfest 2003. At the end of Ozzfest he left to work with Voivod.
Most recently, he joined up with drummer Tommy Lee and guitarist Gilby Clarke to form Rock Star Supernova.… Expand
