Patrick O'Neal

Biography: There was always something a little too cold-eyed and calculating about Patrick O'Neal's on-screen persona - it's hard to imagine him, with hindsight, as a conventional 1950s sitcom lead in "Dick And The Duchess". TV, in fact, gave him quite a few regular guys in that decade, but the more well-known he became, the less warm his characters tended to be. Films mostly used him as an ice-in-the-veins smoothie or else as a downright villain (such as "The Baltimore Strangler" in the 1966 chiller "Chamber Of Horrors"). His best stage and TV roles were a bit more complex - as the defrocked priest in Tennessee Williams's "The Night Of The Iguana" or as a psychiatrist's patient who might be a murderer in the TV movie "Companions In Nightmare", say. In real life, he was a fundraiser for worthy causes and a successful restaurateur.
