STACY KEACH made his Broadway debut in 1969 as Buffalo Bill in Arthur Kopit's "INDIANS," a performance that earned him a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play. His title-role performance in the off-Broadway hit, "MACBIRD," brought him an Obie Award, a Vernon Rice Award, the Drama Desk Award, and Saturday Review's "Best Performance in a Comedy" Award. For his portrayal of Jamie in O'Neill's, "LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT," Mr. Keach won a second Obie, Vernon Rice Award, and the New York Drama Desk Award. His third Obie and Vernon Rice Awards were granted for h is portrayal of Hamlet at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Other classical roles include Falstaff in "HENRY IV" (Parts 1 and 2) at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Edmund in "KING LEAR" at Lincoln Center, and the title roles of "HENRY V," "CORIOLANUS," "PEER GYNT," "CYRANO de BERGERAC," and most recently, "RICHARD III" and "MACBETH" (for which performances he was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award as Best Actor) at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D. C.
Mr. Keach's other stage appearances include O'Neill's, "HUGHIE," at Britain's National Theatre, "IDIOT'S DELIGHT" at the Kennedy Center, "DEATH TRAP" on Broadway, the national company of "SLEUTH," the title roles in the national companies of the musicals "BARNUM" and "THE KING AND I," King Arthur in "CAMELOT," "LOVE LET TERS" in San Francisco (in which he co-starred with Diana Rigg), "SOLITARY CONFINEMENT" in Los Angeles, Washington, D. C., and on Broadway, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "THE KENTUCKY CYCLE," in Washington, D. C. and on Broadway (for which performance he received an Outstanding Artist Award from The Drama League, the Helen Hayes Award as Best Actor, and was nominated for the New York Drama Desk Award as Best Actor) and, most recently, the Royal National Theatre production of "AN INSPECTOR CALLS" at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Television audiences know Mr. Keach for his portrayals of the hard-boiled private eye, Mike Hammer, the intrepid Union Calvary officer in the mini-series, "THE BLUE AND THE GRAY," and Mistral in "MISTRAL'S DAUGHTER," as well as appearances in "PRINCESS DAISY," "INTIMATE STRANGERS," "MISSION OF THE SHARK," the title role in "HEMINGWAY" (for which he received the Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination as Best Actor), and as Sam Houston in the ABC mini-series "James Michener's TEXAS." He is a frequent narrator for NOVA, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, and The Discovery Channel. He narrated the highly- acclaimed PBS mini-series, "THE KENNEDYS."
Mr. Keach's most recent film is John Carpenter's "ESCAPE FROM L. A." for Paramount Pictures, in which he co-starred with Kurt Russell, and he will soon be seen in the New Line feature, "AMERICAN HISTORY X," opposite Edward Norton. His other film appearances include "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER," "LUTHER," "THE NEW CENTURIONS," "FAT CITY, " "THE LONGRIDERS" (which he co-wrote and produced with his brother, James), "THE NINTH CONFIGURATION," "THE TRAVELING EXECUTIONER," and "THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON." Mr. Keach is a Charter Member of the Artist's Rights Foundation, and is the Honorary Chairman of the American Cleft Palate Foundation. He received a Celebrity Outreach Award in 1995 for his service to charity.
Mr. Keach studied at the University of California at Berkeley, the Yale School of Drama, and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He is married to Polish-born actress Malgosia Tomassi and they live in Southern California with their two young children.
