The Platters

Biography: The Platters were one of the most successful groups of the 1950's and were formed in 1953 under the management of Buck Ram. After a few group member changes, the Platters found the right combination in Tony Williams, Alex Hodge, Herb Reed, David Lynch, and Zola Taylor.

The Platters were the first black music artists to have their own music video and were one of the very few black music artists to beat out covers by white artists. The group had many singles reach the top of the R&B and Pop charts, including hits like "The Great Pretender" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."
