Myst (Nintendo DS)

Myst is an immersive experience that draws you in and won't let you go. You enter a unique setting, venturing alone to varied times and places, the worlds that compose Myst. There are no instructions, and you encounter no living beings but soon realize your actions may help individuals who are somehow trapped in a parallel dimension. You don't so much play Myst, as experience it. Of course you must solve a multitude of puzzles, mazes, and problems, but Myst's principal attractions are its environment and the underlying intrafamily drama that unfolds as you explore. Unlike most adventure games, Myst offers no inventory, no death, and no dialogue. Although puzzles don't seem to have much direct connection to the game, they share a commonality. They take on many forms but follow a consistent thread. Some puzzles are very challenging, even obtuse, creating an odd paradox: many buy Myst, but few complete it. It is immensely popular, but most nonadventurers quit in frustration. Fortunately, Myst's popularity has spawned several online sites for hints, walk-throughs, and even saved games . The nonlinear gameplay of Myst lets players go anywhere at any time. Unlike other adventure games, Myst has no inventory, and players never die. Incredibly detailed, Myst offers more depth than any other CD-ROM game to date. [Midway]

Critic Reviews

70 VideoGamer
An unusual and unique game, and the DS should be grateful to be its host. However, it is also the kind of game many will find frustrating, dated, and confusing.
68 Games Master UK
A compelling, sometimes rewarding, but ultimately frustrating adventure. [Feb 2008, p.64]
67 Just Adventure
If you're of a mind to revisit this singular game, having it in handheld form can be a fun way of re-experiencing it on the go. If you're all Myst-ed out, this port probably won't change your attitude.
63 Official Nintendo Magazine UK
Quite why they didn't simply make a new Myst specifically for the DS is the real mystery. [Feb 2008, p.84]
59 NGamer UK
A good game spoiled quite badly by rough presentation and grainy graphics - not what you want when the whole thing is based on visual puzzles. [Feb 2008, p.63]
52 GameZone
Old age just doesn't fit Myst as well as it does other games from the same era.
50 Pocket Gamer UK
Myst is a brilliant adventure game but without the oomph to show off its gorgeous visuals and sound, this DS version is most disappointing.
50 Nintendo Power
Myst DS isn't a terrible game, but don't expect to relive the sense of awe you got from the original. [Apr 2008, p.87]
50 GameDaily
While the puzzles are clever, shrinking the game to a handheld and the lack of a cursor makes solving them more a case of trial-and-error. Purists may dig it, but the vast majority of gamers should pass this adventure by.
50 Worth Playing
Myst can't survive in a modern market where everyone wants to satisfy their itchy trigger finger and drool over their high-definition Blu-rays, but it can still be a relaxing jaunt into another world.
40 My Gamer
It is good to run down a nostalgia path from time to time, but I think it is time to let Myst run its course.
40 Gamervision
Taking an obsolete game and giving it a second-rate DS port only makes the experience more painful.
40 IGN
It's time to let Myst die. It had it's run, and now it's time for the game to finally stop appearing everywhere. Even when it's free, Myst is barely worth playing, so charging $30 for a portable version is just ridiculous, especially since the port absolutely ruins the game.
37 Gamer 2.0
On the DS, it is a bland and nearly unplayable "game" that you'll probably hate so much that you’d forget what love was.
35 Hardcore Gamer Magazine
There's very little consideration for the platform it's been ported to, and even the small handful of DS-specific tools are liable to be useless or buggy.
34 Cheat Code Central
Myst DS is a game you have to avoid like eating Fritos before a first date.
31 Electronic Gaming Monthly
This is a weak port that doesn't do Myst justice; it's not worth a revisit even for nostalgia. [June 2008, p.87]
30 EuroGamer
Even the staunchest of Myst fans can't deny that this is a pretty poor port. Despite being faithful to the original in sound effects and atmosphere, its glitches and lack of new, DS-specific functions ultimately inhibit its worth.
30 GameSpot
Whatever merit Myst had left has been blown away by a sloppy touch interface, poorly implemented new features, and overly compressed visuals.
30 Wired
Do yourself a favor: Steer clear of Myst DS and keep your memories pure.
25 Play Magazine
What potential it still may hold is then nearly erased by a slipshod port to the DS and the realization that, on a screen this physically small, solving puzzles that rely so heavily on visual clues is an exercise in frustration. [May 2008, p.65]
0 GameShark
Every aspect of this game is so poorly implemented that one wonders if the intent was to not make a port of Myst but instead to provide burgeoning adventure game designers a case study of how not to make adventure games for the DS.
