Other than the sound, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 does everything needed to help give the franchise a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to see that EA Sports can do more than just throw in one new play or change one part of a game.

It looks and sounds better than ever, with a host of real and fantasy modes and characters, a mix that offers a lot of variety for both casual and hardcore gamers. As always, it's a game that's easy to pick up and very difficult to put down.

This year's Tiger feels more complex and sophisticated than ever. Putting is more challenging (e.g., total bitch)... Yet, the game is still accessible to armchair golfers, thanks to those welcome arcade-y touches.

Putting cheat Tiger Vision and advice from your caddy are gone, forcing you to read the greens. [Nov 2005, p.118]

A superior golfing system and good presentation, largely because of the detailed create-a-player tool make Tiger Woords PGA Tour 06 an easy recommendation.

Generally, this game is a flawless knock-out.

The gameplay could have been more challenging, and the course in the Rivals mode could have been real courses from the past, but these are small quibbles. It’s a great game, as always.

The mechanics feel better and I recommend it for fans of the series who have to get their fix every year. However, if you're looking for something new, you may want to hold off to see if EA makes a bigger leap with the next generation or next year's version.

For years I've been saying that the only significant problem with the Tiger games is the putting interface. So what did they do this year? They made putting harder by removing caddy tips and employing the same analog swing interface as tee shots.

What remains to be seen is whether EA can reintroduce a suitable element of difficulty to knock the series back in the right direction without forcing an unintentional bogie.

Tiger's undeniable quality has survived the tweaks. As impressive as ever but no great leap forward in evolution. [NGC]

Putting is harder, but much more rewarding--an Ideal Putt Camera helps with gauging potential break on difficult putts.

A great game, but telling you this is a must have title is just silly. While the game is extremely well done, there is just not enough here to warrant adding another Tiger game to your collection.

Despite the knocks against rivals mode and the fact that the new controls are mostly borrowed from what many consider to be a more simple golf franchise, Tiger Woods 06 is still a solid game. Where rivals fails, the more realistic PGA Tour mode is still fun, as is skills 18, a set of target-based minigames.

You will find success early and often in Tiger 06, and though that may not sound like such a bad thing, it isn't necessarily true to the spirit of the sport, where triumphs--however minor--need to be earned, not simply offered to you for the taking.

This year they tried to futz with the gameplay, but the changes are so minute that most veterans will seamlessly transition from last year’s game to this one. Whether or not it’s worth the green fees depends a great deal on your love of the game, but chances are you’ve already aced this course.

It’s just a shame that what it has in excellent gameplay, it lacks in just about every other aspect.

I'm surprised and saddened that this was outdone by a two-year-old game. EA's trying some new things here, but they don't quite work yet.
