Mission: Impossible (Nintendo 64)

While you'll mostly explore stages and try to figure out what to do next without being caught, Ocean mixed in other varieties of game play, including a tense escape from CIA headquarters. Fans of firepower need not worry: you'll get the chance to blast away with some mighty big cannons on a gunboat. Add the extensive cut scenes and you have the most cinematic game since GoldenEye 007. Indeed, Mission: Impossible producer Arthur Houtman cites master directors Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles as key influences on the game's look, feel and tense atmospherics. [Nintendo]

Critic Reviews

70 All Game Guide
Many have complained about Mission: Impossible's trial-and-error gameplay. Is it me, or do those same people seem to have forgotten that "GoldenEye 007" had the same type gameplay, especially on its higher levels of difficulty?
70 Nintendojo
An excellent attempt for Infogrames and I can't wait to see what they will come up with for the sequel.
70 Adrenaline Vault
Sorry to disappoint, but Ethan Hunt doesn't belong to the same clubs as Bond, get the same beautiful babes, use better gadgets, or even wear as nice clothes, and he sure doesn't have as great a game...not even close.
67 Game Revolution
Although Mission: Impossible puts strong emphasis on espionage tactics, some of the puzzles you are required to solve are rather obtuse, resembling mindless busy work, while others are downright (forgive the pun) puzzling.
66 GameSpot
Mission: Impossible is a very inconsistent game - some levels are great, and some just aren't any fun at all. But overall, most of the game is challenging and fun.
66 IGN
The control problems, lack of balance and repetitive gameplay will turn off the majority of gamers spoiled by games like GoldenEye or Metal Gear.

If you can look past graphics that came out of the Stone Age, if you can look past terrible sound effects (when guards get shot they grunt like… uh never mind), if you can look past a main character that doesn't look anything like Tom Cruise, if you can look past some ridiculous puzzles in places, you'll find Mission: Impossible, if you choose to accept it, really isn't that bad.
60 Electric Playground
I enjoyed the story elements of the game immensely. The communication between the characters in Mission: Impossible is mature and completely in tune with the feel of the series and film. Unfortunately, the bulk of the gameplay in the adventure is not up to the quality of the atmosphere that is created for us.

A step back to the bad old days when the name was more important than the game -- a practice that Ocean was supposed to have left well behind.

I SERIOUSLY hope that all you wonderful people out there work hard and want to produce competitive, innovative, and fun-to-play-itiive stuff one day. Not run-o'-the-mill, sloppy, choppy, moppy ol’ mediocre pooey. And hopefully not stuff like Mission: Impossible.
30 Nintendorks
Falls short in many areas, none of them excusable for a game that has been worked and re-worked for so long. If the game had been more like it was originally planned with random AI for the other people and more interaction between characters, it could have been a game worth purchasing.
