Gran Turismo 4: Prologue (Playstation 2)

Compact but vivid, "GT4 Prologue" is a sneak preview to the full experience of "GT4." Though it will be necessary to limit the number of cars and courses included, this product will still include some of the main features of the Gran Turismo franchise such as races, time attack and license tests. This sneak preview will also express the latest technology Polyphony Digital has accumulated over the past two years. [Sony Computer Entertainment]

Critic Reviews

90 BBC Sport
The game is not exactly fun - it's more of a calling, or vocation for the hardcore. But as a taste of GT4 itself, it is impressive. Very impressive.
80 AceGamez
Prologue, though only really a demo of what is to come, is a must buy for all fans of the genre, especially fans of GT.
80 Play.tm
But two things for me are undeniable: 1) that I'm far better at racing games now than I was before, and 2) that I haven't had so much fun with a racer for quite a while.

8 / 8 / 8 / 8 - 32 gold [Vol 783]
76 3DAvenue
Prologue is best recommended to those new to the series as it teaches the basics through to advanced driving skills.
76 Siliconera
The greatest problem with this version of Gran Turismo is the lack of multiplayer support.
75 Game Power Australia
This isn't a game that's going to last you very long, it offers hardly any options and has no multiplayer support. On the other hand, if you're a Gran Turismo fan feverishly looking forward to playing the fourth edition online and want to polish your skills, Prologue is an essential purchase.
74 RealGamer
Although the game shares the same high production values as any Gran Turismo title you can’t help feeling it’s a glorified promotion disc from the front of a magazine.
73 Computer and Video Games
This is a very limited test-drive of the monster that GT4 will be, and as long as that's all you're expecting you won't be disappointed. You might only be getting 10% of the full game but, for a wee while, it's still 100% petrolhead heaven.
71 TotalGames.net
The baulk of Gran Turismo 4: Prologue revolves around those accursed license tests. No, not the 'baulk' - the whole. The license tests are the whole game. You beat the tests to unlock more cars to use in the five-track arcade mode sampler. [JPN Import]
70 Eurogamer
AI cars do feature in Arcade mode when toggled, and in the latter School Mode tests, but they're slow, spaced out and often fairly underpowered, and the lack of even a two-player mode means that hot-seating the 'Arcade' time trial is the most adventurous multiplayer possibility.
60 Thunderbolt
An enjoyable drive, but an incredibly short one at that. Why they didn't include an expanded Arcade mode instead of the debacle that is School and why there isn't any online play, I don't know.
60 RewiredMind
Prologue is technically superior on all counts, but falls short when it comes to good, old fashioned value for money.
60 NTSC-uk
Make no mistake though, Prologue is just that: an introduction to the game that will become GT4. Think of it as the pupa stage that’s shaping up to become a beautiful butterfly. This leads to the question of whether it’s worth buying. It’s a tough choice. [Estimated score; JPN Import]
57 VideoGamesLife
If it’s an actual game that you want, Prologue is a bit of a damp squib – lacking in depth, immersion or excitement to the point that, with its alarming lack of lifespan (a good night in should see you get through most of it), this is little more than a weekend’s rental to satisfy your curiosity rather than being worthy of the asking price lavished upon it. Roll on GT4 proper.
50 Edge Magazine
It's a dry, uninvolving drive that deliberately fails to include the core of the franchise's fundamental components and, ultimately, an unnecessary SCEI marketing coup that could end up doing little to attract GT virgins while leaving veterans feeling deflated. [JPN Import; Feb 2004, p.105]
