It's impossible for us to ignore the fact that as life-long gamers there's something about a gigantic sprite filling up half the screen that just innocently excites us, especially when the sprites are animated with this much detail and character.

A great two player game that provides a healthy break from any other game. However, Metal Slug 3 is an arcade game by design and lacks depth. Challenge comes in the form of finding inane secrets, getting the highest score and not dying.

Metal Slug 3 is worth playing countless times just to discover those almost imperceptible nuances underneath the frenzy. The detail is exceptional, the imagination apparent in every animation a joy to witness. Just try playing it without smiling from ear to ear. [Sept 2003]

Nothing but fun. The gorgeous animation, the wide variety of vehicles and weaponry on offer, and even the high difficulty level help keep you at it well into the night.

One of the funniest and most amusingly violent comic capers you can imagine. Simple yet harmless fun, and demanding a lot of thought and planning by the gamer - as well as fast reflexes - it is one of the late SNKs finest hours. [Japan Import]

A hugely enjoyable 2D blaster with enough charm and cool stuff to warrant repeat plays - if you can cope with the frantic pace and button-bash repetitive strain injuries. [PSM2]

It's certainly not a doddle, as it can take up to a couple days to beat one level on the hardest setting, which certainly makes it last longer. However, it just doesn't offer enough to warrant the price.

Metal Slug 3 doesnt have a huge lifespan. It doesnt have fancy 3D graphics. What it does have is a guy shouting "Rocckkket Lauunchhher!" in a Texan accent while you're freeing a semi-naked evil general from the clutches of ETs who look like walking squids.
