Samurai Warriors: Xtreme Legends (Playstation 2)

This Playstation 2 exclusive expansion pack introduces new characters, and new chapters to the story of the Samurai Warriors. Players discover more impressive weapons as well as a variety of new items and fighting skills. Along with new content, Samurai Warriors: Extreme Legends also opens up the original game's character growth system for continued character development, so that players can create more powerful warriors. Set in 16th century Japan, the fall of the Ashikaga Shogunate caused a series of major wars between individual warlords vying for power. This era in Japanese history became known as the Sengoku or "warring states" period. Samurai Warriors reveals the stories from this dramatic era and combines it with pure Tactical Action gameplay. Critic Reviews

90 Warcry
Just like all of its predecessors, in that it is all about taking a character, wading into combat, and decimating the enemy ranks.
85 Weekly Famitsu
8 / 9 / 9 / 8 - 34 gold [Sept 2004]
85 Worth Playing
For now, this is still the most fun you can have hitting random people with random things by the hundreds, while still whetting your appetite for more of the same.
80 PSM Magazine
Gameplay is still repetitive, but it's a lot of game for the money. [Holiday 2004, p.96]
79 GameZone
With simple controller schemes, this game is very accessible.
75 eToychest
This game is ideally suited for players looking to relive Samurai Warriors, or who are diving in for the first time. For anyone who got their fill of Samurai Warriors the first time around, there isn't enough here to warrant your attention.
75 IGN
This game has been made strictly for the fans and it shows with tweaks and alterations in just about every area.
75 TotalPlayStation
You'd think after almost a half-dozen games, the Warriors franchise would get a little old, but the injection of Japanese flavor and history into an already familiar stew just makes it all the more irresistible.
72 TotalGames.net
The fact that you can't control the camera beyond a 'bring to rear' command is still very annoying when you've got enemies approaching from all sides.
72 GameSpot
This budget-priced bonus pack features several additions to the original game, but it also exists as a playable, stand-alone product--albeit one that isn't as interesting on its own as it is when combined with the original.
70 Siliconera
If you already own and like "Samurai Warriors," Xtreme Legends is something you will love. However, if you're expecting it to be a solid stand alone title, it doesn't have that much to offer.
70 PSX Nation
Predictably competent.
70 Cheat Code Central
The various modes will keep you busy and detract somewhat from the repetitious nature of the gameplay. But if you really get into it, you won't have time to be bored. You must attain a Zen-like state to be at one with this game.
68 Game Informer
There is nothing that makes this worthy as a standalone release. [Jan 2005, p.68]
60 Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
Once you get past the negligible new features, there IS some fun hack-n-slash gameplay to be had with the four new characters. [Jan 2005, p.118]
60 GMR Magazine
It's almost as if Koei planned this expansion pack long ago just to milk Warriors fans for all they're worth. [Jan 2005, p.102]
60 GameSpy
The big reason for diehard Warriors fans to pick up Samurai XL obviously lies in its four new characters. Yep. Four. That's pretty pathetic compared to the nine added to "Dynasty 3 XL" (and even though "Dynasty 4 XL" featured no new warriors, its fun new gameplay modes compensated nicely).
