Echochrome (Sony PSP)

Featuring an elegant black and white art design inspired by the works of M.C. Escher, echochrome is a puzzle game unlike any other. With gameplay based on optical illusions, players must utilize five simple laws of perspective to join walkways, hide dangers, and create new paths to reach the "echos," or shadow guides. Once you've mastered the five laws, use them to create your own mind-bending levels to play and share with friends using the custom level editor. [Sony]

Critic Reviews

91 Gaming Age
Incredibly distinct and interesting, priced right at $9.99, and is absolutely worthy of much more attention.
90 Pocket Gamer UK
From our perspective, echochrome is easily the best downloadable game currently available for PSP.
89 GameZone
Puzzle fans, even those who are skeptical, shouldn't hesitate to make this their next PSP game.
85 Worth Playing
Among typical gamers, though, the primary audience is going to consist of those who like something very strange to look at while hopped up on psychotropic drugs, or want to try and understand the minds of those who are hopped up.
85 Destructoid
The stages walk that thin line between difficult and frustrating, which sometimes forced me to shut off the PSP and take a little break from the game because I only had one more goal to reach, but no visible way to get there. Then again, this could just be the fault of my weakness at the game. Thankfully, after each stage, I’ve had a feeling of satisfaction, so I haven’t had a point in time where I’ve not looked forward to a free moment to lay my hands on Echochrome.
85 IGN
One of those puzzle titles that doesn't come along very often, but immediately strikes a chord for its unique gameplay and incredible depth.
83 The Onion (A.V. Club)
A literal expression of the phrase, "What you see is what you get."
80 PALGN
Echochrome is one of the most inventive games available not only on the PSP, but anywhere. For somebody looking for something new in the puzzle genre, you can't really go wrong with this one.
80 games(TM)
Every moment spent with Echochrome is a refined and edifying one. [May 2008, p.109]
80 GameDaily
It's certainly mind-bending at times, but also relaxing. With a level editor in tow, there's more than enough here to warrant a purchase.
78 Cheat Code Central
Ultimately Echochrome is a concept wrapped up in a game - its minimalist design philosophy paired with new mechanics will win it praise from the games-are-art crowd. However, some gamers may find the mechanics and puzzles fairing on the esoteric side.
76 Gamer 2.0
Overall, echochrome is one of the most unique puzzle games to come out in a while.
75 GameSpot
Echochrome is a unique experience that's easy to recommend.
75 Console Gameworld
A good puzzle game that disappoints with its many faults, but can and should be appreciated for it's unique gameplay.
70 Level7.nu
Echochrome is a puzzle game featuring simple yet cleverly designed puzzles. The graphics are, like the puzzles, simple and perfectly suited for the gameplay mechanics. Echochrome utilizes angles to challenge you in a plethora of levels, and automatically downloads new for you if you’re connected to the internet. There are some flaws to be found, but if you’re into puzzles this is a great title.
70 Edge Magazine
For every moment of epiphany, wide-eyed with an awareness of a resolution, there's an equal number of blunderingly hapless wins, falling or jumping accidentally to new and advantageous positions. [June 2008, p.89]
60 Total Video Games
'Niche' doesn't come close to describing the bizarrely pretentious Echochrome, which positively oozes self-importance from every pixel and line of code.
