Critic Reviews

90 LA Weekly
It's all such a spectacular show.
83 Portland Oregonian
An odd, jumbled, beautifully wrought, often confusing work, this animated feature manages to be a compelling, exhilarating experience.
75 Seattle Post-Intelligencer Jim Peterson
A beautifully drawn film and engaging story marred only by its vague character development and mediocre voice-overs.
63 Boston Globe
It doesn't tap deeply enough into any of the characters to compel us to identify with one or another.
50 The New York Times
Has the sleepy feel of an urban fairy tale, but getting there is a long trip.
50 New York Post
Ignore the furiously overplotted, headache-inducing story -- derived from a series of comic books -- and focus on the exquisitely drawn Japanese animation.
50 San Francisco Chronicle
Too bad the plotting is jumbled, and the characters too numerous and undifferentiated.
43 Mr. Showbiz
It's gibberish, but when X works at all, it works not on the brain, but on the gut.
38 New York Daily News
About as many characters, dragons and force fields as "Pokémon" has pocket monsters, so it may be difficult for the uninitiated to keep track.
30 TV Guide
This film will doubtless interest serious anime fans, but it won't win any converts.
25 Chicago Tribune
Could be the most overblown and confusing example of anime yet, as it piles one pretentious story element on top of another.
20 Austin Chronicle
It sounds as ridiculous as a "Pokemon" episode gone horribly awry.
10 Chicago Reader
It bored me clean out of my wits.
