Boorman’s movies are usually about the repercussions of violence (Point Blank, Deliverance, Excalibur, etc.) but he recreates Cahill as something of a victim of circumstance. Cahill should have been played by Lee Marvin, not by some fat teddy bear of a man like Brendan Gleeson. It’s too bad Marvin isn’t still around, to at least knock some sense into his old friend, Boorman.
  1. The film's quick pace and near-constant action carries you along quite nicely, and by the time Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) makes his climactic appearance, one can't help but look forward to the remaining films.
  2. Hairspray isn’t all that bad, frankly. The songs are catchy, most of the leads are engaging enough (Blonksy and Bynes especially), and there’s just enough low-key subversiveness to keep everything from getting too saccharine.
  3. Here is a movie that celebrates the heyday of adventure cinema even as it embraces technology's bleeding edge. And I'm willing to forgive a lot when giant gorillas and tyrannosaurs are involved. Must be the art snob in me.

The humanity of District 9 adds another dimension to this multilayered, rewarding work -- one of the best of the summer, and undoubtedly the most inventive from the multiplex this year.
  4. One of the oddest and surely the longest cinematic experiences you may ever encounter.
  5. Such garbage that taking a shower at the Bates Motel is a more appealing alternative.
  6. This soothing, elegantly-crafted film is such a marvelous piece of work.

I also think Herzog is making a case for those crazy enough to follow their dreams, even when they take you to the end of the earth. Literally.

Dallaire's tragic story is a fascinating chapter in a sad history.
  7. Music fans of every stripe should kill to see this film, one of the very best music documentaries in recent years.

Unless you're an antsy movie-goer or have a cold heart, by the end of Wendy and Lucy, you'll be engrossed, hoping for the best possible outcome.
  8. Proved that cheerless, existentially unflinching literature can provide the basis for exhilarating cinema.

An admirable film, but its charms will be visible only to the most patient filmgoers.

And to all you sane folk out there, be prepared when seeing this film: you'll ponder the old adage about being what you eat. For those new to the truth about food, this is a great starting point.
  9. You really have to be in the right mood to sit through Tony Takitani. You have to be ready to take in a thoroughly depressing story that moves...very...slowly.
  10. This is an excellent movie -- by all means, flock to it!
  11. Casino Royale is quite possibly the best action movie of the year.
  12. One could literally milk a thesaurus in trying to find the right words to lavish on Saraband: brilliant, towering, majestic, challenging, remarkable.

Garcia is a thoughtful filmmaker not only by the group of actors he has gathered, but in remembering that there has been and will be people watching his movie.

Bell's documentary is an absolute must see for anyone taking part in any kind of debate about steroids.
  13. Draws an unspoken parallel with, of all things, beauty pageants, complete with unnaturally driven kids and nervously supportive parents desperately trying not to appear too pushy.

The performances of young Sampi, Monaghan and Sansbury are amazing. They’re immersing and compelling.
  14. Alas, the big screen also magnifies the problems with Once Upon a Time in the West. Specifically, Leone’s insistence on style trumped the need for substance. The film is basically a B-Western stretched an agonizing 165 minutes.
  15. I wasn't in the mood for this film, but it got to me anyway.
  16. This well-crafted documentary shows us that getting old isn't all that terrible.
  17. While Howl’s Moving Castle is far from perfect, it’s still a very good movie. It’s just not a great one.
  18. It’s funny, it’s smart, and it pokes fun at exactly the things it should (organized religion, big business, and audience itself).
  19. While the film is admittedly imperfect, it nonetheless deserves to be seen by all Americans to provide a clear understanding of what kind of a country we are currently at war within.
