  1. The Following is as graphically violent, gruesomely gory and generally horrifying as anything on network TV and most anything on basic cable. But as crafted by Kevin Williamson, 'The Following' is also riveting.
  2. Season 2 of True Detective is as slow as molasses, and just as dark, in its first hours.
  3. This American version incorporates the redneck humor so beloved in reality TV these days with battle-of-the-sexes cliches that should have been retired in the '70s.

  5. Meyers is likable and pleasant, and the first show probably isn't a good indication of what his Late Night will eventually be like. In the early going, though, there isn't much fresh happening there.
  6. By the time the episode wraps up with a good-vs.-evil clash, though, it's really rolling, with special effects that are both fun and scary. Doherty, Combs and Milano are appealing, and also believable as sisters, and T.W.   7. The Whispers (created by Soo Hoo and claiming Steven Spielberg as an executive producer) is too slow and self-consciously creepy to hold my attention for long. Your response may vary.
  8. The comedy is all over the place in tone, bouncing from broad and silly to poignant and real to silly again.
  9. By the end of the first episode, who’s who and what’s what have begun to sort themselves out, and Turn looks like a series that will be absorbing to follow for its characters, not just its action.

The kids are fine; Gregory Smith is the show's strongest link as complicated, 15-year-old Ephram, and Vivian Cardone ("A Beautiful Mind") is off-the-scale adorable as 9-year-old Delia.   11. Writer Sarah Phelps has done her best, but short of throwing out Rowling's characters and plot, there was no real way to make The Casual Vacancy bearable.
  12. The writing is clunky and the acting is almost universally stiff. The characters need to be much more engaging to keep us from wanting to jump overboard from The Last Ship.
  13. Of the week’s new dramas, the only one with abundant blue skies is the lively Astronaut Wives Club.

  15. A grim and goofy sci-fi saga.
  16. One of the new season's bigger disappointments. The frantic pace of this action drama, set behind the scenes in a casino security firm, can't disguise the shallow story-telling and annoying, badly developed characters. James Caan is wasted as the boss, and Josh Duhamel got much better stuff to work with on "All My Children." [22 Sept 2003, p.E6]

  17. In the early going, the series works best as sort of a modern-day “Mission: Impossible,” and could actually use more of that show’s caper elements.

  19. What Chasing Life mainly raises, though, is eyebrows, for being so laughably bad.
  20. A single-camera comedy with no laugh track, Weird Loners is a pleasant enough viewing experience.

  25. Steinberg promises that Black Sails, with no parrots and no peg legs, will be pirate-cliché free. Unfortunately, the female characters don’t escape sexist stereotypes. And that keeps Black Sails from being as much fun as it might have been.
  26. Defiance wants to be that crossover science-fiction show that appeals both to true believers and general audiences. If "Terra Nova," which aimed for that same ground, didn't succeed, I can't see "Defiance" doing it either.
  27. The pace is generally fast enough to distract from the convoluted plot.
  28. Even for MTV’s young target audience, the characters in Scream are remarkably empty and bland. But this is a slasher show, after all.
  29. Catfish: The TV Show is riveting entertainment, but it's also potentially the most important series MTV has aired.
  30. To see its potential, you'll have to grit your teeth through a lot of painful moments early on.
