I cringed many times while watching the first 3 episodes of this show...but not for the obvious reasons. I think it exemplifies just how ridiculous the "war on drugs" is. Watching the mexican-american police officers make marijuana busts and give each other high-5's while practically improverished "shells" for the cartel are incarcerated, children ending up in civil services, etc. is just pathetic and in many ways disgusting to watch. I think this show simply proves the obvious, Americans want "illegal" drugs. From junkies to Wall Street execs. And no different than the Prohibition, many morally clouded individuals, gangs, cartels (whatever name you wanna give) choose to profit significantly by the sheer existence of this illegality. Much better to spend your time watching Ken Burns' excellent docu on The Prohibition than viewing low level law enforcement deal with the repercussions of America's antiquated and unenforceable drug policies. It's these very policies that have in actuality given existence and credence to the "cartel". Regardless, this is all a larger debate. In terms of this particular show, it's a simple COPS scenario that cares nothing for telling the real stories of the participants at this low-level of the drug trade. A&E, do bettter! Expand

While each episode builds dramatic tension as initial tips and drug dealing arrests inevitably lead to the promise of taking down a major cartel shipment, the personalities of the members of the narcotics team prove just as engaging.

It's unglamorous, nuts-and-bolts police work, applicable to a wide range of law enforcement situations, and that's where much of the show's interest lies.

The series somehow still lacks tension as the narcs go from one bust to the next interrogating perps who all say the same thing: "I don't know anything."
