  1. This elegant, shaggy dog of a 19th-century western takes us on a painfully human journey across the old West.

If it weren't for the commercials and basic-cable cutaways from some violence, you'd swear you were watching a classic Western. [23 Jun 2006, p.66]
  3. "Broken Trail" is not as well written or compelling as "Lonesome Dove," but Mr. Duvall brings an earthy believability to even the most plodding lines.

Although any western movie with Robert Duvall is worth watching, Broken Trail does a disservice by perpetuating the myth that 19th century whites intentionally gave items to Indians that contained smallpox and other viruses. Yes the native population was hit hard by smallpox in the late 1830s. But they were infected accidently, not on purpose. In fact, many whites tried to keep Indians away from the trading posts to reduce their chances of getting smallpox but they came anyway. The Broken Trail website even talks about "biological warfare" to exterminate the Indians. It did not happen. Since most of the people watching Broken Trail aren't well-versed in Western History, they will take "Smallpox Bob" as gospel. It is simply not true. Expand
