A wonderfully diverting film with Mr. David at his abrasive best.

Clear History purports to have a real plot. But the movie also feels at time like an extended all-star jam episode of "Curb." Those are, perhaps not coincidentally, the best, and funniest parts of Clear History.

There’s not a lot of plot to be had here, and the news that Clear History leaned heavily on the improvisational impulses of its cast might usually ward off the improv-weary. But Clear History has a nice, confident and well-edited breeze to it (including a lot of jokes about the band Chicago), with a fun cast that includes standout riffs from Michael Keaton, Danny McBride and Eva Mendes.

Clear History is amusing enough to pull a viewer through it, although those who haven’t yet acquired a taste for Curb might find it the equivalent of a pricey two-drink minimum without enough payback.

A revenge farce that takes such perplexingly arbitrary turns that it finally sits down like a confused Labrador and refuses to budge. [12 Aug 2013]

It all feels like “Curb”-cutting-room-floor material set atop a feeble plotline and a group of unrealized and disposable supporting performances. Clear History is pretty, pretty average.

On par with some of the lesser Curb episodes; which is to say good enough to keep you watching, but not good enough to actually make you laughOn par with some of the lesser Curb episodes; which is to say good enough to keep you watching, but not good enough to actually make you laugh all that much. The problem here is that the main character is just too abrasive to be likable. At his best Mr. David is funnier than almost anyone on TV, but at his worst he can be cringe inducing. Many of the scenarios herein fall firmly into that category, and thus watching Clear History can at times be an unpleasant experience. But I do admit to watching the whole thing and laughing more than a few times, mostly at the banter of the supporting cast. The casting director really did a good job on this one. And as always with Mr. David's work the plotting is surprisingly intricate; the twists and turns and "aha!" moments associated with Seinfeld and CYE are as plentiful and clever as ever. It's definitely worth a watch. Expand

The HBO movie is definitely hilarious but it does feel overly familiar as it looks like an extended episode of "Curb." Also, a lot of the really great cast is never used to their potential and often feel like background characters--for example, Danny McBride goes viciously underutilized.

Overall, while the film has some issues in the fact it feels like the same thing we've seen over and over again, the movie is still pretty funny and can easily satisfy the hole left behind from "Curb."
