  1. Some of the pirates tonight, perhaps inevitably, take on a little of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow. But the acting is generally solid and the action is both stirring and, happily, easy to follow.
  2. The two-hour pilot episode was engaging and fun in a way that NBC's other throwback dramas ("Knight Rider," "My Own Worst Enemy") have failed to be.

That NBC has bought into this concept reflects network TV's lowered expectations, but the series' two-hour premiere is a respectable effort--handsomely shot and offering old-fashioned end-of-the-week escapism, albeit with a character unable to escape his own island purgatory.
  4. The tone varies wildly from action-adventure to serious costume drama.
  5. Defoe's ambitious bachelor is transformed into an ardent husband and father, whose memories of his previous life are so tinged with romance they include falling rose petals. I kid you not.
  6. Crusoe, based loosely on the classic adventure tale by Daniel Defoe, is an international co-production that champions swashbuckling and scenery without grasping the significance of credibility and character development.
  7. Hokey and poorly paced with unfathomably lame flashbacks, it's like a relentlessly mediocre movie of the week that still has 11 more hours to go.

Crusoe and Friday are both great eye candy but the humor and effects and story line -- wow! I love this show! May it live long and prosper!!

I was really disappointed in this, one of the only shows of the new season that I thought could be worth watching. Why on earth did they I was really disappointed in this, one of the only shows of the new season that I thought could be worth watching. Why on earth did they decide to start the series with Crusoe already on the island? Already friends with Friday? And the plot of the overly bloated 2-hour premiere was a lame search for pirate treasure, with the least frightening villains I've seen on TV in a long time. This show as a real dud. It seemed to want to do a Hercules/Xena thing at times, but it lacks all of the charm of those great series. It was just one bad decision after another. Too bad. I wanted to like this one. Expand

Terrible re-invention of the Daniel DeFoe novel. With so may characters landing on the island you must ask the following question: Is this Terrible re-invention of the Daniel DeFoe novel. Just plain awful (and stupid). Nice scenery, nice looking stars and not much else.
