It's not that Cohen, especially in his Ali G character, never gets off an amusing ad lib. It's just that his humor and his characters aren't nearly funny enough. And several times they cross the line into all-out meanness. It's an approach that's uncalled for, unimpressive and - as when he picks on a religious woman simply because she's overweight - horribly unfunny. [21 Feb 2003, p.139]

The critics really missed the mark here, sometimes analyzing a show intellectually is simply the wrong way to go about judging it. Da Ali GThe critics really missed the mark here, sometimes analyzing a show intellectually is simply the wrong way to go about judging it. Da Ali G show is one of the funniest shows of all time, and it still holds up ten years later. For some reason many people didn't recognize Sasha Baron Cohen's comedic genius until the Borat movie, however he was even funnier on season 1 and 2 of the Ali G show. Simply watch if you haven't yet, and even if his brilliantly brazen absurdity doesn't match your style of humor, you can at least appreciate there never has, and never will be anything else on television quite like it. That was the best late-night show since The Chris Rock Show and Dennis Miller Live. I remember when he made a cameo appearance in the Madonna video "Music," but he's so stylish, looked like Jam Master Jay or LL Cool J back in the Def Jam 80's heyday, and his glasses looked kinda weird. Wasn't that Sacha Baron Cohen responsible providing as the voice of Ali G? Probably. Full Review »
