Even for casual viewers, the episodic jokes and the sheer earnestness that radiates from Sam and Tim should be enough of a hook. In a sea of dark TV, Detroiters is the light-hearted, smart comedy with a wonderfully sincere core that we need.
The comedy is always doing something good--and that’s beyond the many laughs drawn from all kinds of comedy, physical to observational to blunt force.
A rare new sitcom with as much heart and soul as jokes and wackiness, Detroiters is a welcome surprise premiering on Comedy Central Tuesday night.
Richardson and Robinson make for likable leads and Detroiters is savvy and funny in many ways, but what really made it work for me was the admirable affection that comes from its love for Detroit.
Richardson and Robinson’s laid back approach to rolling out comedy--and especially the former’s addictively amiable nature--makes for consistent chuckles that can develop into hearty guffaws. It’s a soft sell you won’t regret buying the next morning, and one that could pay off even bigger in weeks to come.
A pleasantly dumb series.
Robinson is solid and Richardson continues to be one of television's funniest actors, but we're just not buying what Detroiters is selling. [Feb 3/10 2017, p.102]
