If the first episode of the new season--which is Capaldi’s last as the Doctor--is a bit of a greatest-hits rehash, that is easy to forgive. Mackie is an energetic and enjoyable addition to the show, and her down-to-Earth character brings a healthy scepticism to all things Doctor-related. Even more charming than Bill’s curiosity and intelligence are her interactions with Nardole (Matt Lucas).
It's a shame, really, that this particular arrangement of actors and characters won't last--the new season is running strong out of the gate.

Capaldi's best season by far. They finally dropped the annoying angry man tone and introduced an interesting companion (Bill). The ensuing teacher/pupil set-up was far more successful. The writing too was more imaginative and had a greater sense of fun about it. Shame Capaldi is going now that he has finally found his feet as Doctor Who.

It looks like this will be a fun season. The first episode is called “The Pilot,” and in its way reintroduces us to the Doctor by seeing him through Bill’s uninitiated eyes. ... Mackie, a relative unknown, proves instantly likable, and the character distinguishes itself from the other companions in the series.
Another rough season of writing for the show as Capaldi's time as the Doctor limps towards the end. That horrible Monk trilogy of episodes is Modern Who at it's lowest point and the show simply failed to recover from that. At least Capaldi got a solid final episode to go out on, It's just a shame that they couldn't deliver that quality of writing throughout this season.

Easily the worst season in years. its almost like Moffat is trying to ground the show before he leaves to make whoever is next look as bad as possible.

Season 10/36 is a vast improvement on the last few seasons of the show. The real heart of Doctor "Who" is back at last. Pearl Mackie is the most sympathetic companion since Catherine Tate and she shines with intelligence and quirky humour. At last Peter Capaldi IS the Doctor. I am going to miss him and this line up so much when it is ditched for the all new Chris Chibnall version in 2018/2019. Matt Lucas has excelled expectations and brings some pretty good acting muscles to his role as the Jeeves character, Nardole. Each story this season has improved on the last - I feel it is the first time in many years that I can actually hear different writer's voices coming through. I have felt that even when a writer of quality was used by the show, it had the custard of Steve Moffatt poured over it. I have watched the programme since 1963 and love Doctor Who in all its incarnations - yet even my enthusiasm was waning until now. I can't wait for Extremis this Saturday and feel that Moffatt - at long last - understands the basic equation between what is complex and what is convoluted.
