The real stars are the designers, and it's an eclectic bunch, some already working in the industry, others who dream to.

If you can see the forest through the trees, it's good, wearable fashion that's the real "fashion star" on this show, and it gives viewers an unusual glimpse into the world of retail despite all the superfluous hoopla.

Absent from this show are the ridiculous clothes that look like they belong on clowns and strippers. In their place are serious, wearable clothes that are, for the most part, so beautiful, so well-tailored and so, yes, sellable, that you'll want to buy them right up.

It is a smartly conceived look at the populist side of fashion.

It's a unique concept [public can purchase online that night or the next day], although that's where Fashion Star's originality ends.

The glossy you-won't-see-this-on-cable production values support a relatively straightforward competition structure, whittling down 14 contestants until a single winner emerges.

There's a germ of a good idea in the massively overproduced Fashion Star.

Fashion Star's debut lasts 90 minutes but feels as though it's about five hours.

Fashion Star is a skimpy little show. You might buy something in the evening, but beware those morning-after regrets.

This possibly could work, and isn't entirely unwatchable.

Viewers barely get to understand the challenge before the designers' clothing is revealed in a gaudy runway show, featuring flashing neon lights and blaring music that are the opposite of stylish.

[Fashion Star falls] in to the same X Factor trap by amping up a tried-and-true format at every conceivable turn until the final product has all the subtlety of a Victoria's Secret runway show.

Fashion Star remains a cool idea. But its execution and formatting need work.

In an attempt to distinguish itself from a dozen previous TV fashion competitions, which is not a bad goal, Fashion Star ends up feeling overly complicated and a little cluttered.

The show moves along with the dull, humming smoothness of commerce. [19 Mar 2012, p.42]
