Futurama is typically about its crew of 30th-century misfits tackling a common-day problem in a futuristic environment, one that usually starts rather trivially and grows into total chaos. This formula is untouched in the excellent season premiere.

What started very promisingly is running out of steam fast, and this is the most disappointing season to date. Nine episodes in and the jokes are becoming sparse, the plots increasingly narrow and the situations repetitive. Where wit and sentiment once worked together little evidence remains. Characters are mindlessly selfish and shallow much like the irritating ogre Homer has become in the Simpsons. The strong start to the season saw events of this year being mirrored such as the Mayan calendar and the American Election, but they have quickly degenerated into single plot snoozers which will undoubtedly have seemed more than vaguely familiar to long time fans of the show (sex changes, arena fighting contests, Bender finding himself yet again). As the writers struggle not to make the same jokes twice they seem to have forgotten to put any in at all. The monks all burp fire? Hilarious! Another Escher reference? Inspired! Fry losing his memory yet again? Did the writers lose theirs? It pains me to say it but one of the greatest series I have ever watched must surely be coming to an end, less it runs into geriatric old age like its yellow skinned sibling. Please leave us with somewhat good memories of Futurama, as the thought of banging a Season 10 out of my head sounds extremely painful. Full Review »
