    Beyond the emotional pull of the individual stories, Get to Work breaks down a certain us/them barrier, showing with painful clarity the holes left by the absence of family structure and education.

    Though these people may not resemble any job seekers you know, the portraits feel about as honest as reality TV gets.

    While it's a rough, sometimes grim, process, it feels that much more well-earned when, at the end of the first episode, one student, Bobby–who struggled to speak for himself in mock interviews–visits a future class to report that he's held a carpentry job for a month.

    It is neither a cheap thrill or too painful to watch these lost souls being drilled in first impressions.

    It's all so real it verges on the mundane, but the show is also strong and necessary medicine for these times.
