Crudup makes the most of his unconventional cuckold, letting you see how the unexamined privilege of this easy, breezy good guy enables Jean. The surrounding characters lack similar depth, and I wish there were more invention in the filmmaking. Still, Watts has enough shine to make Gypsy a wandering, adventurous character-study worth following.
Gypsy is an elaborately structured drama that's too derivatively clever by at least half; throughout, its intricately arranged causes and effects grow stiflingly busy and thematic, resembling a behavioral proof that Rubin seems determined to confirm.
I have liked many others TV shows of all genders in the past but this is the only one that I am a big fan of. I have really, really enjoyed this series. Just the fact that the one and only Naomi Watts is on this show makes it extra special but to my surprise I discovered the young British actress, Sophie Cookson and OMG! she is such a talented actress, gives a powerful performance, her eyes express so well the different emotions of her character, and the chemistry with Naomi Wow! I've never seen anything like that before, it's just beyond awesome. Thanks to Lisa Rubin for writing such a masterpiece. Ignore the critic's review and rating. You just have to see the overall rating (rotten tomatoes and here). If you have not seen this show and want to see a woman in a lead character and acting according to her feelings and you also like the sexual tension, well, this is the show for you. I hope Netflix or some other network listen to the fans and bring Gypsy back.
Since Mulholland Drive I have been a Naomi Watts fan. She is intelligent and an enigmatic beauty with great sense of style. In Gypsy Naomi is a great als she is always. Eloquent and smart, she convinces as a psychologist searching for het own dark side. Dont believe the bad reviews by journalists. The story is very fascinating and modern. I am at episode 7 and Im still very intrigued.
While Naomi Watts is a fantastic actress and gives a great effort, her character is so unpleasant and performs a series of irrational acts that she’s challenging to watch. Instead of being risqué, without clarity or a proper protagonist Gypsy is a series that just can’t seem to find its voice.
It’s effective intrigue, yes, but a kind quickly deadened by dialogue stupefying in its torpidity--as is the case throughout--and by the flatness of these characters.
Something’s missing, but the flaw doesn’t leap out at you. The series is elegant, sensitively acted and directed--and an utter snooze. ... There’s nothing wrong with it except everything.
A depressingly bad show for the talent it wastes on horrendous dialogue, unbelievable characters, and the kind of soapy plotting you’re more likely to see on a Lifetime TV movie than prestige drama.
I found this show fascinating and watched the whole first season in two nights. I'm a big fan of Naomi Watts and she certainly did not disappoint. How Netflix could cancel this amazing show so quickly boggles my mind. The chemistry Naomi's character has with "Sidney" is dazzling and all the rest of the cast is top notch! You won't be wasting your time if you choose to watch this show. You will be asking for more for sure!
A critic used the phrase 'glacial pace' as a descriptor. It's **** mind-numbingly slow. I love Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, and have hung in there just because they are always great. Gypsy never truly satisfies and unfortunately Jean and her obsession, Sidney, have no real on-screen chemistry. The thing that vexes me most? I really want to love this show....I like the ideas. It is definitely disturbing and shocking that a therapist could manipulate her patients and inject herself into their private lives. Is she lost or is she a total sociopath? We may never know. As frustrated as I am with this series, I would love to see where it goes. I want to see how far she goes.
I hope it will be cancelled so Naomi Watts could focus on something interesting. Gypsy is boring uninspired fantasy of someone who reads a lot of blogs about psychology of relationship instead of reading legit books about the subject. The main plot about Watts character falling in love with some hipster girl is totally unbelievable, because the girl looks more like millenial caricature and not living, breathing person. There is nothing to fall in love with.
I agree with the other user's review, I hope this show gets canceled. The plot sounded interesting at first, but as I continued to watch more episodes, I discovered the storytelling is rather dull and flavorless. I had a hard time concentrating on the show by the 4th episode. Naomi Watts did a good job with what she was given, though she could be doing something more meaningful with her time and energy other than filming this show. As someone who is studying to become a psychology professional, I find it beyond disturbing that the main plot is about the lead character's unprofessional behaviors. Not to mention they never specified what kind of therapist she's supposed to be. And the last but not the least, is how racist this show is. The show takes place in California, supposedly, yet there is no non-white people but the husband's assistant?? AND the assistant is suspected to be having an affair with the husband from the very beginning??? What are the writers trying to imply? Your little story could be affecting someone's view on race and how that someone treats people, or worse. This is a show I will never let my future children see. However, I do applaud them for writing something out of the society's heteronormative box. Still, this is not a healthy show to watch.
